News: JAMES LAVELLE CURATES WEEKLONG RESIDENCY AT THE JAZZ CAFÉ
James Lavelle DJs each night throughout the residency
The legendary figure behind Mo’Wax records and UNKLE, James Lavelle is set to host a weeklong residency at The Jazz Café. Coinciding with the release of UNKLE’s fifth studio album, the residency launches on Friday 15th September; each event will focus on the various genres and musical influences that have helped to define his prolific 30-year career.
Founding Mo’Wax records at the age of 19, James Lavelle went on to sign and release DJ Shadow’s cult album Entroducing before going on to form his own musical project UNKLE. Collaborating with not just DJ Shadow, but also Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and the Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Lavelle’s first release as UNKLE marked the starting point of an incredible body of work in music. This includes several more releases as UNKLE, a longheld DJ residency at Fabric – mixing their inaugural Fabric live CD - soundtrack work for the iconic film Sexy Beast and remix work for the likes of Beck and Massive Attack.
Curating seven days of music at the Jazz Café in September, each night celebrates some of the defining points in James’s career.
Starting where it all began, James celebrates his Mo’Wax roots on Friday 15thwith a live showcase from label artists, featuring the incredible Attica Blues,Elliot Power, Mink and Thinkpiece. The live show is followed by DJ sets fromJames Lavelle and Charlie Dark as well as DJ Milo and the legendary Trevor Jackson.
Saturday 16th sees James welcoming two of the most innovative figures in electronic music today, Dorian Concept and Luke Abbott. With both performing live on the night, it will be the second time Luke Abbott has appeared on a line up curated by James following Meltdown in 2014.
Bristol soundsystem pioneers Smith & Mighty take the stage on Sunday 17thfor a look back at James’s musical beginnings and the sounds that first attracted him to DJing.
On Monday 18th, James hosts a tribute to the late great David Axelrod – a jazz artist whose release marked a brave new different direction for James’s Mo’Wax label.
One of James’s favourite bands, the mighty Loose Ends perform on Tuesday 19th. Key figures in British R&B, they’ve been a regular feature in James’s DJ sets over the years.
The next stop on James’s residency sees a celebration of some of the UK’s finest homegrown hip hop talent on Wednesday 20th. Making their second appearance at Jazz Café after a triumphant reunion show in January, the illusive group Task Force will perform alongside Rodney P and the legendary Skinnyman.
The week ends on Thursday 21stwith a live performance from the formidableLee Scratch Perry. A pioneering figure in the invention of dub music, James has long been a fan of Perry’s work, inviting him to play alongside UNKLE on several occasions.
