THE SATURDAY NIGHT SPECTACLE WITH CHRIS LEVINE
LAURA MVULA joins A SUNDAY OF NINA SIMONE
Wilderness have announced details of their Saturday Night Spectacle, a collaboration with Chris Levine and IY_Project. The Atrium programme including Letters Live; A Sunday of Nina Simone with special guests Laura Mvula, and Will Young; and a host of bands programme across music stages The Love Hotel, The Carousel and The Folk Barn.
Wilderness prides itself in unique one-off projects, and never-before-seen creative collaborations and is delighted to add these stirling names from the arts to an already rich lineup of world-class music, arts, theatre, comedy, food and talks.
The diverse top-quality talent from a broad spectrum of the creative arts cements Wilderness’ position at the forefront of festival experiences. The Saturday Night Spectacle sets Wilderness apart with fantastical feats of creativity achieved; each year bolder than the last.
This year Wilderness invites Chris Levine to the show’s signature Saturday Night Spectacle with a unique installation in a UK exclusive for 2017. Always a surprise, only those in attendance will be party to the detail, but all are invited to come together to be part of the ceremony... The renowned light and visual artist extraordinaire Chris Levine and IY_Project will showcase his creative vision on a scale never before seen.
Chris Levine adds: "Wilderness is a platform for the latest and most hard hitting and elevating IY_project to date. We will take this experimental work to its next octave level and everyone present will go on a deep innerspace trip that is somehow profoundly cosmic and transcendent. Be light."
Wilderness is proud to welcome Letters Live for a green field festival first. In less than four years since its conception, Letters Live has become known for attracting outstanding talents to perform remarkable letters written over the centuries in front of a live audience. Each show is decidedly unique, and details of who will be performing is kept closely guarded until the event itself...
Letters Live’s varied previous cast of characters include globally acclaimed talents like Benedict Cumberbatch, Jude Law, Ian McKellen, Kylie Minogue, Russell Brand, Caitlin Moran, Stephen Fry, Tom Hiddleston, Sally Hawkins and Sir Ben Kingsley. Bringing to life letters from an astonishing cast of letter writers, from David Bowie and Elvis Presley to Che Guevara and Charlotte Bronte, all in an intimate setting. Transported to the Wilderness Atrium, this will be as show to remember.
Letters Live add: “We are itching to finally bring Letters Live to Wilderness and determined to seduce the crowds with a stellar cast of performers reading some of the greatest correspondence ever to have been written. To be doing so in such a gorgeous setting is the icing on an already irresistible cake.”
THE ATRIUM SUPPORTED BY TIME OUT
The Atrium supported by Time Out, is announced in full, and plays host to a host of high arts, with world-renowned musicians, dance and performance. This year Wilderness will host A Sunday of Nina Simone, a heartfelt and thoughtful tribute to undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians in history. The show will see special guest appearances from Brit & Mercury prize nominee Laura Mvula, the ever effervescent Will Young, Honeyfeet’s Rioghnach Connolly, The Ronnie Scott’s Club Trio and Paul Robinson, Nina Simone’s drummer for two decades.
Wilderness is delighted to present National Theatre Live for 2017, with a screening of their 5-star hit ‘Amadeus’, which received astonishing reviews. The Atrium will also welcome Letters Live, the Oscar and BAFTA nominated pianist and composer Hauschka for an intimate performance and welcome back Ronnie Scott’s, who return to Wilderness to present contemporary blues icon Lucky Peterson. The musical bill continues with appearances from forward-thinking jazz and dance band Alex Mendham and His Orchestra, as well as performances from hypnotising violinist duo Vladimir & Anton and the festival circuit’s only dedicated orchestral outfit: The Wilderness Orchestra who will soundtrack film favourites, back by popular demand.
Contemporary dance is also at home on The Atrium, with only the leading lights invited. Sadler’s Wells, the world-leading venue dedicated to international dance will experiment with many forms of dance from contemporary, to flamenco, hip hop and more. Sadler’s Wells will also bring Breakin’ Convention, their annual festival of hip hop dance and theatre. Company Wayne McGregor will be performing excerpts of Entity and Far by multi-award winning choreographer Wayne McGregor CBE.
Participation and joining in is a key part of The Atrium’s ethos too. Revellers are invited to join in with Hip Hop Karaoke, rise early for Mass Yoga with London studio Stretch or tie the knot with friends (or strangers) at a Mass Wedding with Shesus & The Sistas.
